Four ‘secret’ variants of corona found in sewer system waste water samples, can become a threat

Corona cases in World: Corona virus has wreaked havoc in the world. Every day lakhs of cases of corona virus are coming to the fore. At the same time, masks and social distancing are being considered effective to protect against corona. Meanwhile, a team of US researchers has detected at least four ‘secret’ variants of SARS-CoV-2, which causes the Kovid-19 virus, in samples of wastewater from a public sewer system in New York City.

Mark Johnson, a professor of molecular microbiology and immunology at the University of Missouri and a co-corresponding author on the study, believes the results suggest that the ‘secreted’ mutations identified in New York City could potentially be linked to animal origins. Although these origins have not yet been verified, they believe a possible source may be rats that frequently enter New York City’s sewer systems.

strange pedigree

The findings have been published in the journal Nature Communications. “For example, we still don’t know where the Omicron variant came from, but it did come from somewhere,” Johnson said. He said, “These variants are being explored everywhere, including omicron which eventually spread to the general population and wreaked havoc. We think this strange pedigree may be where the next variant of Kovid-19 comes from.”

Researchers have been sampling wastewater from 14 treatment plants in New York City since June 2020. They also reached out to other researchers in the US who were doing similar work with wastewater. He saw some unusual results. Johnson said, “They were different, but they all had the same Q498 mutation at a particular locus on the virus. Surprisingly, in most of the New York City samples, Q498 was changed to Q, Y, or glutamine into tyrosine.” If you look at the database there was not a human patient and that mutation does not continue to happen.”

convergent evolution

The researchers noted that a possible explanation could be a biological process called convergent evolution. “An animal in Missouri is not mixing with the same type of animal in New York City,” said John Dennehy, a virologist and professor of biology at New York City University’s Queens College. “Therefore, the evolution of viruses in each geographic region is independent of each other, but because it is the same animal, the virus looks the same in both places,” he said.

According to lead author Davida Smith, associate professor at Texas A&M University-San Antonio, “Waste water monitoring is fast, inexpensive and unbiased.” “This has the potential to be implemented in a variety of contexts based on resource availability, especially in areas with limited resources such as low testing and vaccine availability,” Smith said.
