Over the length of his career Krishnamurthy also served as chairman of PSUs such as Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd and Steel Authority of India Ltd.
Dr. V Krishnamurthy, the founding chairman of Maruti Udyog – now Maruti Suzuki India, passed away on Sunday, June 26, aged 97. Aside from heading Maruti Suzuki during its formative years in India, Krishnamurthy was also the chairman to multiple Public Sector Undertakings during the course of his career. He is credited with the turnaround of fortunes for Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd (BHEL) and Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) which also earned him the name ‘Turnaround Man’. Krishnamurthy also held some key roles with the Indian Government including being a member of the Planning Commission and Secretary, Ministry of Industry.
“Dr. V. Krishnamurthy was my mentor right from the time I started work and right through my entire career. He had an important role to play in helping me build TVS Motor Company. He was one of the tallest leaders in Indian industry. His contribution to the growth of India was immeasurable. It is a great loss to Indian industry and to the country,” said Venu Srinivasan, Chairman, TVS Motor Company.

Krishnamurthy was appointed as Vice Chairman and MD of Maruti Udyog in 1981, tasked with overseeing the company’s launch of the iconic Maruti 800 before he moved to SAIL in 1985 where he turned the company around from a failing entity to an industry leader. He also served as the Chairman of the National Manufacturing Competitiveness Council between 2004 and 2014. In his final years, Krishnamurthy was aiding in running the family company, UCAL Fuel Systems, in an advisory role.

Krishnamurthy was also awarded the Padma Shri in 1973 followed by the Padma Bhushan in 1986. In 2007 he was awarded the second highest civilian award in India, the Padma Vibhushan.
