New Delhi: The Indian equity benchmarks on Wednesday traded higher in opening deals led by gains in banking stocks. As of 9:30 am, the benchmark BSE Sensex jumped 514 points or 0.61 per cent to 59,376, while the broader NSE Nifty moved 144 points or 0.82 per cent higher to 17,721.
Mid- and small-cap shares were positive as Nifty Midcap 100 index was up 0.78 per cent and small-cap shares were trading 1.26 per cent higher.
On the stock-specific front, Kotak Mahindra Bank was the top Nifty gainer as the stock surged 2.79 per cent to Rs 1,934.80. Bajaj Finance, Eicher Motors, Bajaj Finserv and IndusInd Bank were also among the gainers.
In contrast, Tech Mahindra, Britannia, Adani Ports and UltraTech Cements were among the losers.
The overall market breadth was strong as 2,064 shares were advancing while 660 were declining on BSE.
On the 30-share BSE platform, Bajaj Finserv, Kotak Bank, Bajaj Finance, IndusInd Bank, Axis Bank and PowerGrid attracted the most gains with their shares rising as much as 2.58 per cent.
Meanwhile, HDFC, Adani Green Energy, Dabur India, Apollo Tyres, Jubilant FoodWorks, Mahindra & Mahindra Financial Services and Tata Consumer Products are among the companies which will announce their December quarter results later in the day.
Sensex had rallied 848 points or 1.46 per cent to close at 58,863 on Tuesday; while Nifty had moved 237 points or 1.37 per cent higher to settle at 17,577 on the Budget day.
