What Affects The Two-Wheeler Battery’s Lifespan?

EV batteries have been the center of discussion around the industry for a while now new methods are being developed to make them more efficient.

EVs replace one of the essential power sources of vehicles – the engine with a battery. EV batteries are specifically designed to provide enough power so that the vehicle can operate similar to traditional vehicles. These batteries need to be charged from time to time to ensure that they function properly. 2W batteries have been around for a while, but now the question that pops up in everyone’s mind is – how long do these batteries last?

Statistic readings

According to research, in India, an average electric two-wheeler-owning individual has to bear costly battery replacement costs. There is a noticeable drop after periods of usage, and these batteries generally tend to last up to 4 years maximum.

Factors that affect the lifespan of 2W EV batteries

There have been loads of data figures that have been provided by research firms around the world. According to Ather Energy, a Bengaluru-based startup, electric scooter batteries retain about 93% of their life after about 25,000kms of usage.

The interesting thing to note here is that what causes these batteries to degrade is not the usage of these batteries but rather the time. No matter how carefully the battery has been used, the capability of the battery to hold charge degrades over time. According to research conducted by Ather, a well-maintained 2W EV battery can last up to 8 years before needing any replacement.

When it comes to charging these batteries, research shows that continuous charging does not seem to affect the degradation of the batteries. But the major problem here could be fast charging. The major issue with fast charging is that thermal heat dissipation is not properly done for EV batteries which reduce the lifespan of these batteries. Thus, it is advised that fast charging is done occasionally and not frequently.

When does the owner need to change the battery?

This pretty much depends on the owner. The decision is influenced on the basis of what the final goal of the owner is and how much cost the owner is willing to bear. According to Ather, when the battery drops down to 70% capacity, that is the time when it should be changed.

New technologies are being developed in order to use the old batteries that can’t be actively used in electric vehicles. Energy storage solutions are where 2W EV batteries can be used, but the technology doesn’t exist yet.

It is fascinating to notice how rapid developments are being made by researchers in order to improve the battery life. Manufacturers of EVs have been dishing out cutting-edge technology batteries in order to ensure that their batteries provide maximum utility to the customers. In the distant future, battery life will be a very important factor that companies will focus on.
