Alfa Romeo has forayed into the electric vehicle (EV) space with the reveal of its latest Alfa Romeo Tonale in a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) iteration, that will spawn other EVs in the company’s future portfolio. The all-new Alfa Romeo Tonale will be available in three different models- Sprint, Ti, and Veloce, with bookings to commence from Q4 2022 and deliveries from Q1 2023. Along with the PHEV powertrain, the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale also features a typical Alfa Romeo exterior, a new infotainment system, a host of driver assistance systems, and Level 2 autonomy. The exterior of the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale has also evolved and looks much meaner than before.
The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale will be offered in two turbocharged powertrain options- a 1.3-litre PHEV and a 2.0-litre petrol unit. The former is capable of producing 180bhp the front wheels, and another 121bhp to the rear, for a combined output of 272bhp, while a 15.5-kWh lithium-ion battery promises a 50km range. The transmission is handled by a 6-speed automatic transmission. This version will offer three driving modes- Natural, Advanced Efficiency, and Dynamic, and can be toggled between depending on the type of driving. The other larger unit produces 256bhp and 400Nm of peak torque, with power being sent to all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic transmission.

There’s also diesel with a front-wheel-drive mild-hybrid setup, that will be made available to markets outside the US. This will be a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 engine coupled to a 48-volt electrical system, which is good enough to produce 130bhp or 160bhp, depending on the variant. A 7-speed dual-clutch transmission will be standard.
The exterior of the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale has also evolved and looks much meaner, and bolder than before, and this is due to the lowered front end. The headlamps and taillamps take a leaf out of the SZ Zagato or the Proteo concept car, with a three U-shaped LED design. The front grill is also typically Alfa Romeo. Rather than going for aggressive lines, Alfa Romeo has opted for a cleaner, smoother outlines with a stout shoulder line that runs the length of the car just under the door handles. Alfa’s classic rotary-telephone-dial wheels are present as well and enhance the profile ever further.

The 10.3-inch centre touchscreen running Stellantis’ Uconnect 5 infotainment system gets a floating design, while the 12.3-inch digital cluster is more configurable, including its layout. Other features include wireless Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and wireless phone charging as standard, and Uconnect 5 includes Amazon’s Alexa virtual assistant as well. The Alfa Connect app will allow owners to start and stop the engine and lock and unlock the doors remotely. It will also be able to receive over-the-air updates.

The 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale is also equipped with standard safety tech including adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, and automatic emergency braking, while the Traffic Jam Assist feature will be able to steer and adjust the speed of the vehicle on the highway. However, these features will be distributed among the three trim levels, as well as receive subtle visual changes to its exterior, and the way it looks. With each trim, the 2023 Alfa Romeo Tonale gets sporty in its design and stance.
