The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) under the Consumer Affairs Ministry, has formulated performance standards for two-wheeler EV batteries following a spate of fire incidents in electric two-wheelers.
The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS), the central standards setting agency under the Consumer Affairs Ministry of the Government of India, has formulated minimum performance standards required for electric vehicles in India. The performance standars have been formulated at a time when several incidents of fire in electric vehicles have raised safety concerns among consumers. Investigations ordered by the government are already underway into the recent spate of incidents of fire in EVS. According to the BIS, standards have been released for test specifications for lithium ion battery packs and systems.
Multiple electric vehicles from across many major brands have been involved in incidents in the past few months.

The standards incorporates the test procedure for the basic characteristic of performance, reliability and electrical functionality for the battery packs and system for either high power or high energy application. The standard of EV batteries have been formulated based on several real world scenarios which also include operating batteries at low or high temperatures. The tests also involve battery performance when not in use for a long time, or when being shipped or stored. Apart from the new guidelines, the BIS is also expected to come out with two more standards related to batteries for various passenger and goods carrying vehicles in the coming days.

“Safety and performance are two critical aspects of electronic devices. Requirement of Battery system for use as a power source for propulsion of vehicles are significantly different from battery used for consumer electronics or stationary use. Electric vehicles are vehicles that operate on electric motor and rechargeable batteries. Over the past decade, Electric vehicles have grown in terms of visibility and availability in the market. For safety of consumer, reliability and safety, Energy storage systems become critical part of any EV. Most of the EVs use Lithium-ion batteries because of its high power to weight ratio,” the BIS said in an official statement.

Safety of electric vehicles, particularly electric two-wheelers, has become a major concern because of recurring incidents of fire in EVs. Brands like Ola Electric, Okinawa Autotech, Pure EV and Jitendra EV were all involved in fires of electric two-wheelers. The most recent incident of an EV fire was reported earlier this week, involving a Tata Nexon EV which caught fire in a Mumbai suburb. The Tata Nexon EV is India’s highest-selling electric passenger car. Tata Motors has already begun an internal investigation into the incident, the first such incident involving a Nexon EV.
